I didn't look at him 😡
I had had enough of Gdańsk. He had had enough of Warsaw. The train introduced us.
Scene 1 of 14

We met halfway through our dislike.
We met on a moving train. He hated Warsaw and was moving to Gdańsk. I hated Gdańsk and was moving to Warsaw. Two people heading in opposite directions. We met right on that border of dislike.

The next day, far away.
The following day, he flew far away. We stayed in touch. Then he did something stupid. Distance, it turned out, was not our only complication.

And then he came back.
When he returned, we met again. It was good. We spent time together and had the kind of conversations that go deeper than the usual questions.

I hugged him.
I do not usually let people close enough to touch me. I hugged him anyway. Then we kissed.

He said something. Of course.
Then he said something that made me angry. We stayed in touch anyway. Apparently, we were not very good at simply disappearing.

The city I was leaving.
I found myself back in Gdańsk and visited him again. He was feeling low. My being there helped. So there I was, in the city I had been so ready to leave.

He hated this place, too.
We visited the hill where his heart had once been broken. He hated that place. Our little collection of difficult places was getting rather specific.

He could not have known.
By accident, he invited me to a restaurant I hated. He did not know. Of all the places to choose.

I ended up at his place.
I found a new apartment there surprisingly quickly. Another time, I could not get into my friend’s apartment. I went to him.

An unexpected encounter.
On a walk, after all our difficulties, we saw the Little Prince. An unusual addition to an already unusual story.

This one left without me.
The next day, I missed my train because of him. We had met on one. Now another was leaving without me.

Something we could do together.
It was his mother’s birthday. I offered to help him do something for her. We ordered food, cleaned up and spent time with her. For a while, it was simply something we did together.

Not everything became easier.
During the night, another thoughtless thing he did made me sad again. Closeness had not made us suddenly good at everything.

For now, an ellipsis.
Now we are each on our own way. I think about him. He thinks about me. For now, that is where the story pauses.
